Hello! My name is Abel Torres (Mr. Torres). I am excited to be working at Hope of Detroit this year as a 3rd grade teacher.
A little bit about myself:
I was raised in Southwest, Detroit and deeply love this community! I have a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from the University of Michigan AA, and a Masters in Elementary Education from that same school. Last year, I taught in a Kindergarten classroom in Ann Arbor. I also worked at Cesar Chavez Academy High School as a Paraprofessional for two years.
Things I love to do: I enjoy reading, running, going to museums and watching movies with my family/friends.
The students have been doing amazing work and thinking in Science class! So far, we have learned the importance of inquiring about the world. Some of the great questions the students have wondered about are: How was the world made? Where do clouds come from? Why do we have finger nails?
Throughout the year, we will continue to wonder about the world/science, and learn important scientific skills to be able to do so!
The students will have "Reading Log" HW everyday, so join your children in their reading growth at home!
In class, we have already learned the importance of prediction (based on the cover of the story), and making important and profound connections to our lives/things around us. We will continue to grow on valuable reading skills throughout the year!
In math, we first reviewed basic content from second grade--like addition, subtraction and place value. However, things will begin to speed up as we move to more advanced topics. Two new skills that the students will begin learn this year are multiplication and division. Please make sure that your child(ren) are practicing at home--it makes a huge difference!
