Hope of Detroit Academy was approached by Nicole Curtis from Rehab Addict on HGTV DIY Network. Nikki and her crew were working on a renovating a house on North Campbell. She purchased a lot on the corner of Horatio and Campbell and was working on creating a park for the neighborhood. She wanted our students to be a part of her show and help create the park. They came into my 8th Grade Science classroom and spoke to the students about her project and requested their help which my students were very excited to do.
Tuesday we ventured down to the site to work with Nikki and her crew. Upon our arrival Nikki had layed out her plan for what they would be doing. She designated students as painters, diggers, and planters. Nikki had supplied some old tires that needed painting that would become flower pots and other decorations. She had some boys working on digging post holes for a fence that would go around the park. The diggers also filled the tires that would become potted plants. Our students took their jobs seriously and worked hard to get things started at the park. We were down there for about 2 hours, you could see the park starting to take shape. I've promised the students we will walk down there to see the finished product. I know they will feel a sense of ownership of the park since their hard work helped to get it all started.
The Detroit series of Rehab Addict will be airing sometime in February. I was told February Sweeps! Once the show has aired they will give us a copy of the show that we can keep for years to come! I'm very proud of my students and was very happy to see all their smiling faces enjoying making their community look good!
